We've all had one and given a few out. But why do we do that? Isn't it kind of weird to call each other nicknames when we already have a name ourselves?

The importance of pet names in relationships: Research has long known that pet names are an important part of building intimacy. According to a study from the University of California, pet names can help strengthen feelings of closeness and belonging and deepen the emotional bond between couples. Through pet names, we show our partner that we value them and that we trust each other.

The most common nicknames for women and men: Many couples always use the same nicknames – the classic ones are "honey," "bunny," "darling," and "sweetie." According to a survey by the Kinsey Institute, these nicknames are popular because they express affection, tenderness, and love.

Unusual and crazy nicknames: In addition to the classic nicknames, there are also some unusual and crazy variations reserved for special moments and inside jokes. A study by the University of Oxford found that humorous nicknames like "cuddly monster," "sweetheart," "cotton candy," or "cuddly bear" have a particularly positive effect on relationships. One of my current nicknames is "poop bird," and it probably falls into this category. It's not very flattering, but it's all the more humorous when I hear it.

The magic of nicknames: As strange as the construct of nicknames may be, they are all the more important. Nicknames help us know who belongs to us. Even close friends often receive nicknames as a sign of a strong friendship. Parents also often give their children nicknames—so we grow up with them from an early age and associate them with happy and carefree times.

Science agrees: nicknames are important in our relationships. Whether classic, sweet, or wacky, choosing a nickname is a personal decision influenced by the couple's unique dynamic and sense of humor. By consciously using nicknames, couples can strengthen their relationship and deepen their love and affection for one another.

So call yourself whatever you want - as long as it comes from the heart.
