We've all had one and given a few out. But why do we do that? Isn't it kind of weird to call each other nicknames when we already have a name ourselves?

Through pet names, we show our partner that we value them and that we trust each other.

One of my current nicknames is "poop bird," and it probably falls into this category. It's not very flattering, but it's all the more humorous when I hear it.

Even close friends often receive nicknames as a sign of a strong friendship. Parents also often give their children nicknames—so we grow up with them from an early age and associate them with happy and carefree times.
